New Mexico & Oklahoma 2016

May 15, 2016

Myraid Gardens
Myraid Gardens
Last day with the family (tears) so we meet them for breakfast.   We go to one of our favorites in this part of the county, The Waffle House!

Overholser Mansion
Not full when you arrive
We decide that we'll see the Myriad Botanical Gardens, as on Sunday for things open after 12 and they are leaving around noon.   Even though the Crystal Bridge is not open, we tour the grounds and see many flowers in bloom.   Oh how beautiful they are, sure miss having this type of flowers in Havasu!

Next we go to the Overholser Mansion, it was build in 1903 and Mr. Overholser was consider the Father of Oklahoma.   It's closed but we are able to tour the grounds.  One of the most interesting things is that the stained glass depicts the Black Slaves, first time we've seen this.

This area is considered the mid-town area and is full of this type of homes....extremely beautiful area.   We take a walking tour around the area, so incredibly peaceful and beautiful.  While walking around we talk to one of the locals, they tell us about farmers market and Boathouse District.

Practicing
Watching Rapids be created
We go to Uptown Farmers Market, about 8 blocks from the mansion.  Not much of a market but we do buy a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, yum!

After we are finished walking around, we head to the boathouse district.  This is the training site for the USA canoe and kayak teams, soon to head to Rio.  They had time trials last weekend, just our luck.

We did however get to see them fill the site with water and create the rapids, extremely interesting.   On one course they used it to train perspective tour guides and the other course, individuals perfected they're skills.  Even though this was a controlled rapids area, I would not want to challenge it by myself, OK, maybe!

Riding the rapids....he might be 12
Snuff and Dennis leave around 12:30 but Bobby and I stayed to watch them practice for about an hr.

We are now home, will watch the Golf Tournament and rest the remainder of the day, traveling to Memphis tomorrow.

What an busy day we had with my sister and brother-n-law.  Started out by having breakfast
OK Bombing Memorial
with them at their hotel.  Then we headed to the Oklahoma National Memorial, this is a memorial to the bombing that occurred on April 19, 1995 at 9:02 AM.

Even though we had been here 4-5 years ago, they've totally redone it and some of the items still remained but many have been relocated or placed in storage.   It's extremely well done and many items are new since our last visit and of course they tell an impressive story about that sad day and the days that followed.

The weather is cold (sweatshirt weather) and started to rain, so we didn't spend as much time outside as we normally would have.  The reflection pond is still beautiful, the one major change out here, you can now walk among the chairs that represent those that lost their lives that day.

We next went to the OK museum of art.   One of the workers at the memorial had recommended this to us, boy were we glad, as they have one of the largest collections of Chihuly glass in the world.  We love this artist and to see this collection was so impressive.

Next we headed to National Cowboy Museum, this is one of the best museums that we attended on cowboy history.   Some of the art is so remarkable, hard to say which we liked the best, but we do have two favorites.  The "End of the Trail" (statue of indian of a horse) and "Canyon Princess" (Marble Lion).   After spending a couple of hours, decided it was time for lunch, so we left and went to Panda Express.

Next we decided to visit the State Capital.   Upon arriving, we saw that they were set up in the main parking lot the "American Ninja Warrior Show".   Apparently they will be film at 9:00 PM tonight, we hope to return to watch it.   We did get our pics taken at the start, very cool!!!  This episode will air sometime in June.

Toured the Capital, not as impressive as many of the others we've seen, but still a stunning piece of art.   We then left there and headed to the Stockyard City.  Very disappointed, as their very little to see and there were only a few stores and one restaurant.

Drove back to Snuffy's (my sister) hotel and rested for about an hour, before we went to Primo's (Italian Restaurant) for dinner.  Food was not that great but filling.   Dennis was not feeling good, so we said goodnight and will meet for breakfast.   This also means we won't go see shooting for American Ninja.   Will watch on TV.

Got back to coach around 8, long day but so much fun being with my sister!!!

Arrived in Oklahoma City around 1:00 PM, got a late start, not used to the 2 hr time difference yet!
Uneventful drive, country side is pretty since it's green but still a boring drive.  Not much between these two cities to look at except windmills (which seem to be replace the oil industry) and cows.

We are set up at the Midwest Elks Lodge, Midwest City is a suburb of Oklahoma.   Nice little lodge except it's in the middle of Tinker AFB landing pattern.   At first the refuelers were practing touch and go's, now some other plane (huge) is practicing.   It's some radar plane.

Waiting for my baby sister and brother-n-law to arrive from Gladewater, TX.   They'll be here until Sunday, we'll leave on Monday unless weather makes us pack up sooner.

May 12, 2016

Got up and had the coach to Camping World about 7:30 but had to wait until 8:00 for the service dept to open.   Once we got it in, we left and drove to Weck's in town for breakfast.   It was very good food, huge portions.

We then did a little shopping at Walmart and then drove over to Best Buy to look around and waste time.  Got back to Camping World around 10:45, finalized the paperwork and left around 11:30.

We arrived at the Amarillo Elks Lodge around 4, set up and then went in for a few cocktails.   Will spend evening watch TV and then we'll head to Oklahoma City tomorrow.4

May 11, 2016

Left Havasu at 6:30, took us a little longer than anticipated, as I noticed a leak at the pumping equipment to the pool.   Had to wait for Danny to arrive, so we could show him the problem.

Once on the road, we head to Kingman, where we had breakfast at Cracker Barrel.  Next stop was Albuquerque.   We pulled into Camping World at around 5, checked in and determined we could spend the night on their road outside the main gates.  Dry camping at its finest!

We did encounter a small problem about 2 hrs out, the protective cover on the drivers living slide for the slide out awning came loose, who knows why, probably the horrible condition of the roads that we had traveled.  Never seen so many potholes on I-40.

Ran into town and hit Costco.   It's amazing how things add up quickly when you are at Costco!!!  Go news, gas was only $1.84.

Got back to the coach and the electric was not working, determined it was the GFI in the bathroom.  Once we fixed that, we had everything back to normal....yeah!

Spent the evening watching TV, not an exciting evening.

April 19, 2016

We've had a wonderful winter here in Lake Havasu, taking many side trips, etc.   Hard to believe it's already been 7 months and we are thinking about our trip east.   We certainly can't wait.

Park is extremely empty and seems strange to be one of only 4-5 left in our loop.   We will be traveling to the NE corner of the USA to catch our last 15 states!!!   Think we'll hit the road on the 12th and head to Albuquerque for 2 nights.   Once we get closer, I'll post more.

Here are some of the pics I took this morning of cactus in bloom, it's a beautiful time of the year around here.
