Saw my first and hopefully only, rattlesnake on last Thursday hike, it was a coontail, also know as a western. Even though I was in the car....others got out but NOT ME, it was scary. It was amazing how it went from sleeping to coiled in a matter of a second. My girlfriend's husband threw dirt on it and boy did it respond quickly. The rattle was amazingly loud. Made me very nervous to continue hiking.....went about a mile from were we spotted the snake.
