Niagara Falls 2012

Maid of the Mist entering Horseshoe falls
Decided to tour the Canadian side today, it’s amazing how much more you see of the falls from that side.   Granted you don’t get as close to the American Falls but you see the entire thing vs. just part of it.   The Horseshoe Falls, you get up closer and can see the water rolling off the edge, you almost want to take a boat or raft over the side….but NO.   The water is a beautiful green color.

Once again we walked the entire frontage area along the river…..today I think we walked around 6 miles.  Yes, we are very tired but got to see so much more than taking a tour bus.   Plus we could spend as much time as we wanted at any spot.

American Falls from Canadian side
Went up into the town area, most of the shops are your typical tourist shops, restaurants, etc.  They have Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, Hersey’s Chocolate store, several casino, etc.   After making our way back to the car, we headed to the Whirlpool area.   Watched the aero tram go back and forth over the Niagara River, plus watched the jet boats come up and play in the whirlpool.   We then went to the coach for lunch and to give our feet a rest.   Around 3:00 headed out again and went to Fort Niagara….along the way we found the town of Youngstown, walked down to the marina and got to see the Niagara River up close.   We could also see Lake Ontario off in the distance.   Decided to take a drive to see the lake, no beach to really see it but was able to get close enough to see its massive size and the large freighters on it.

Horseshoe Falls from Canadian side
Came home and went to dinner at Olive Garden, afterwards I went over to the local Hobby Lobby to look around.   Came home and Bobby informed me that the slide cover on the drivers living room slide has unraveled and we’ll have to get it replaced.   Hopefully it will come in tomorrow and we can get it fixed in Erie or the next town which will have an RV dealer that can handle the repair.

Note: if you park around the Ferris wheel or at the Skylon Tower, you’ll only have to pay $5 for all day parking.

Cave of the Winds
Headed to the falls at 8:00 AM, we decide to walk along the falls area, saw a pedestrian bridge that would take us over to Goat Island.   What the heck, it’s early and we need to stretch our legs.   Saw some amazing view along the way; we finally arrived at the Cave of the Winds.  Here we bought the discovery pass.   It allows us to experience 5 items:  Maid of the Mist (boat ride), Cave of the Winds (walk near the American Falls), Niagara Gorge Discovery Center, Niagara Legends of Adventure (part of the visitors center) and Aquarium.  It also allows us to get on and off the trolley as much as we want.   The cost is $33 a person…..very good bargain.

Maid of the Mist
We then took the tour of the Cave of the Winds….awesome!  You get right up next to the American Falls….at the top, you get to experience hurricane force winds coming off the falls….yes, and we got wet.  Thank goodness they give you ponchos (yellow).   They also make you wear special shoes, which you get to keep.  They are similar to a sandal…nice quality.   We then walked over to Horseshoe falls to experience it.   It puts out a lot more mist than the American Falls we just experienced.   You could use the poncho again, but we braved it and got wet.   Not bad.

Horseshoe Falls (borders America & Canada)
We then got on the trolley and head towards visitor’s center.   Along the route, we stopped at Three Sisters Islands….you have to walk out to these but you have the opportunity to see some spectacular views.   Once again we got on the trolley and head to Maid of the Mist, where we’ll board the boat for the boat ride.   I’m so excited, I can hardly wait.   This is what I’ve come for.   When you enter this area, you have the option to go up to the observation deck or take elevator to boat; we went immediately to the boat.   Got our poncho (blue) and boarded the boat, headed to the top deck, as the lower one was full.   We got a position on the front rail with Bobby behind me.   Camera is ready, hopefully my pictures turned out as the mist is very heavy….in fact, it’s very hard to take pics, to much mist.  But I loved it, even though you get very wet.   Was it worth it….oh, yeah!

American Falls (on American Side)
Once we departed the boat, you can take a route up to the south side of the American Falls and experience the mist from it.   Mist heck, its rain!!!!   We got soaked, the poncho’s protected the cameras but not us…..the mist was so heavy, we could not take pics.   I looked like a drowned rat!  So much for doing my hair! But it was awesome!

Headed to the observation deck, more pics and then we headed to downtown area where we had a subway sandwich for lunch.  Then we head back to visitor center to Legends of Adventure Theater.  Then we board the trolley and went to the Discovery Center.   Next stop was the Aquarium, however when we left the Discovery Center it was raining, so we put back on our poncho’s to take the 5 minute walk to the Aquarium.   It started thundering…..not a happy camper, since we were on a bridge with steel railings.   Made it safe and sound!

Decided we’d better head home as we were exhausted from walking probably 7 miles today.  We got to the coach and I said the outlet mall next to us was still open.   Yes, we walked over and make a loop around the mall.   Had Chinese food at the food court and I bought a pair of short at Tommy Bahamas (they were going out of business).   This has been the highlight of the trip so far for me, Bobby still likes Indy 500.

Niagara at Night

Left Elkhart around 8:30 and headed east to Niagara Falls.   About an hour into the trip, the motor stopped but Bobby was able to restart the engine and we continued.   It happened again but again, Bobby got it restarted.   Called Steve Porter and he gave us some ideas to try if it occurred again.   Around 1:00 PM, we stopped at a rest stop for lunch and upon leaving, the motor would not start.   Bobby went to the battery dept and the 12 volt switch was bad.   He by passed the switch and once again we were on the road.   Called Steve and told him he was correct, he’ll buy us a switch and bring to Havasu in October.

Niagara at night with colored lights
We arrived in Niagara Falls around 5:30.   Checked in at the Elks Lodge (we are next to the Fashion Outlet Fall), we were told they are having a brown bag auction, so we decided to participate.   Bought two bags, we’ll use them in Havasu for the Christmas Exchange.   Around 8:00 PM, left the Elks and decided to see the falls at night.   Beautiful…..they light them up with colored lights.   Can’t wait to see them in daylight tomorrow!
