Arkansas

June 9, 2012
Arrived in Texarkana
We arrived in Texarkana around 6:30 PM.   Set up at the Texarkana Elks lodge on the Texas side of town.   That evening (Saturday), went inside and registered plus had a few drinks with the locals members.   They gave us several tips on what to see and where to go.

We then went to get a movie rental since we have no cable.   Got the movie Act of Valor…..very good but a little gory.    We try to find some geocashing on the way home. …no luck.

June 10, 2012
Got up and went to IHOP for breakfast, then went to downtown to visit the sites.   It’s Sunday and visitor center is closed so will only see what I have on my list.   Got to see the Ace of Clubs house (in very poor condition….needs major work on outside, did not see inside), Post Office (two state post office), old union station, Scott Joplin mural, some old homes, etc.   It was exciting to stand on the state line of Arkansas and Texas.

Later that afternoon we decided to travel to Hope, AR.   Very small town and not much to see, since, it’s Sunday.   We toured the birthplace of President’s Clinton, a small home in downtown Hope, AR.   It’s amazing what we forget over time.   Forgot his real father died before he was born and at the age of 10, he changed his legal name to his step-fathers name of Clinton.   He was never adopted by Mr. Clinton but felt it was important to his step brother to share the same last name.   The house reminded me of my mother’s parent’s home.   It was filled with old memorabilia that his grandmother and mother had.

Judges chambers in visitor center
We then drove 8 miles to the town of Washington, AR to visit the Washington State Park.   Only the visitor center was open so we toured that building.  We then drove around town to view the other buildings plus visited the graveyard.   It dated back into the 1700’s…..very cool.   Did a little geochasing and then drove back to the coach.   Bobby decided we should drive to our next destination, which was about an hour away.

We arrived at Craters of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, AR at 5:30.   Just giving me enough time to go out and explore for diamonds before the field closed at 8:00 PM.   Believe me in 90+ heat, its hard work digging for diamonds.   You are correct…..I found Jasmine and 2 plastic diamonds that parents hide for their kids.   I’ll try it again tomorrow….not sure if this is for Bobby.   This is a beautiful State Park….out in the middle of nowhere but worth the drive.   Cost $31.33 a night to stay here.   Sites were big and even though it’s surrounded by trees, had no problem get a spot for the coach.

Diamonds are in this dirt somewhere
Got up, had breakfast and headed to the diamond field.   Bobby is with me and we hope to strike it rich!   Wrong, today we found more Jasmine (there are 31 colors you can find) plus some quartz.   Oh well, better luck next time.
Digging for Diamonds
We went back, took showers and head to our next stop….Hot Springs, AR.   Arrived around 1:30 PM, had lunch and decided to rest a while.  We have been on the run and just need a break.   Will head into town later tonight, that’s if thunderstorms do not occur, weatherman says we are expecting strong storms until 9:00 PM.

Decide to stay in....will eat dinner and watch a movie.  Tomorrow will tour the town.

Bath house in Hot Springs
What a beautiful place Hot Springs, AR is.   Not only is the National Park right in the middle of town but there are two beautiful lakes that surround town.   We decided to tour the Hot Springs downtown area....National Park.

Some of the buildings are closed on Tuesdays so we only got to look into 5-6.   The visitor center was fascinating.   Back in the early 1900's these facilities were very popular but are rarely used today.  In fact, only two of the bathhouses are used on a regular basis.   The cost for a bath was around $90.....no, we did not have one.

We walked up and down the streets, taking in the sites, hot springs, museums, etc.   Later in the evening, we decided to drive to the viewing tower and look at Oaklawn.   The tower cost $5 a person to go up but the view was well worth the admission, Oaklawn is a race track with a casino inside.   Took pictures but did not gamble.   We then did some geochasing and then headed to the Elks lodge for their hamburger night.   They cost $3.50 with all the trimmings, excellent.

June 13, 2012

Spent the day driving around the two lakes in town....Hamilton & Catherine.   Hamilton has very few public beaches, so we looked mostly at the homes, etc.   They were gorgeous!   Most had a boat dock on the lake.  Believe me, if we lived here, we'd have one of these houses!   Lake Catherine is about 7 miles from town but oh so beautiful.   It has a state park and the next time we come we'll state at it or at the National Park campground.   Both can handle our rig.

On the way back into town, we say Diamondhead Golf Course....of course we needed to play.   Played 18 holes, must say that it was mighty hot.   Both of us shot 90.....Bobby was having a bad day!!!!   Tomorrow we head for Little Rock.

June 14, 2012

Arrived in North Little Rock around 10:30 AM.   We need to catch up on the laundry, so will spend time doing that.   The RV Park is right on the River....we don't have a view but I can walk and lItook at it.   There's a pedestrian bridge to the east (200 feet) that we can walk across to Little Rock.  We might do that tomorrow, as at the end of the bridge is President Clinton's Library.   For now, we are resting and just enjoying the evening.  It's hot out....90.   They say humidity is going to climb....not my favorite thing!a

President Clinton Library
Got up, had breakfast and walked across the pedestrian bridge to the Clinton Library.   It's very unique building but filled with history from his 8 years in office.    It's always amazing what we forget and what we remember in our past, they do an excellent job in recreating is time in the White House.   The building is a two story, very modern building, that allows you to see the Arkansas river and the downtown are of Little Rock.   Upon finishing our tour, we took a shuttle to his museum store, did not buy anything.
Oldest State Capital in USA

We then walked down the main street, toured the "market" area, went into the nature museum, went to the AR history museum and then to the Old State Building.  This was a fascinating facility.   It's the oldest State Capital Building in USA.   They've done a remarkable job at restoring it to it's original grandeur.   By the 1950's it was failing apart.    We then went to lunch at "The Hop", split a clubhouse.  We then took the trolly back across the river to the North Little Rock side, then we had to walk about 1/2 mile to the coach.   Later this afternoon, we'll take the car and tour the sites outside the downtown area I want to see.

Old Grist Mill in North Little Rock
Took a drive to the Old Grist mill in North Little Rock....what an amazing place.  If I were to get married, this is the place that I would choose!   Absolutely breath taking beautiful.   It's hard to imagine that the main bridge and tree bridge are actual made of stone.   They look so real.  The building is well maintain and looks like it has wood floors but they are stones also.  If you ever get to North Little Rock, this is a must see.
